It does not pay the subscriber when somebody clicks on the ad. Instead, it pays only when the person clicked on the ad buys some product from the website or subscribe for a newsletter. So, if your website is one that publishes movie reviews, and you have a referral ad that is an online ticket booking engine, you’ll get paid only if somebody clicks on the ad and goes on to buy a movie ticket. Simply somebody clicking on it does not yield any money to the AdSense subscriber. While setting up the ad for your website, you can check the types of referral ads available and what action brings in money and how much. That is, you can pick the Google ad referral you may want in your website.

The AdSense referral ad will look the same as the normal Google AdSense ad block does, but with a ‘Referral Ads by Google’ suffix. Another difference is that the referral ads come in one more layout option - a link only ad type. Since this link will automatically adjust itself to the page settings, it’ll seamlessly blend with the site layout. Further, unlike other Google ads, the link only ad comes sans any Google branding. Also, the ‘pick best performing ads’ option lets you have only the best performing referral ads in the site always. As Google does this optimization, you have no trouble to bare regarding choosing the best ad.

For your entertainment sites, choose a couple of referral ads that is related to your niche, and place it at strategic parts in the website layout. Also, the Google policies are quite ambiguous regarding if there’ll be any penalty imposed if the subscriber himself clicks on the ad, given the fact that with referrals nothing happens with a click alone. Not to mention the option to ‘pick market’ in the selection interface. What if the subscriber targets the world audience and does not concentrate on one market? Also, the number of advertisers to choose from is currently very less unlike usual AdSense.
